WHY GO
Resolutely traditional Graz was European City of Culture in 2003, with its beautiful, Renaissance UNESCO World Heritage-protected parliament. The town is an idiosyncratic mix of minimalist bars with their own websites and Gaggia machines and cafés where you can drink milky coffee and eat chocolate-and-marzipan cakes. Graz is an urban landscape which - for all the dynamism of modern architectural flourishes such as Domenig and Eisenkock's Mursteg bridge - still exudes the pleasant charm of a stately and well-preserved county town.
