WHY GO
A heady combination of expanses of sky, sea and windswept vistas can make Suffolk a breathtakingly beautiful place to visit. In Britain's easternmost county, the elements definitely prevail. Legend even has it that in stormy weather you can hear the underwater tolling of bells from nearly a dozen churches swallowed by the sea in 1286. Those left on land, meanwhile, are treasure troves of hidden artworks, not to mention fine examples of Norman architecture. It is the countryside painted by Constable and Gainsborough, both of whom came from this area.
