Good buys: The best buys include Makonde carvings, made from ebony, kiondos (wooden baskets), jewellery and tribal souvenirs, including colourful Maasai beaded jewellery, spears and shields. There are also batiks, local sarongs, soapstone carvings and paintings.

Local dishes: The food in Kenya is similar to that found across the region. Basically, the Kenyan diet consists of meat, with potatoes, rice, mashed plantains (matoke) or maize meal (ugali). The meat, often beef, goat or mutton, is usually cooked in a stew with potato or other vegetables. The one major dish which is unique to the country is the national obsession known as nyama choma (barbecued goat's meat).
