Mykonos isn't best suited to those wanting to catch up with Plato in the shade of an olive tree. At night, Mykonos town is woozy with party animals riding rough-shod through expensive bars and clubs, jet-set wannabes haemorrhaging cash in designer stores, and confused cruise-ship escapees who have just come ashore. The Kivotos Clubhotel is just under three kilometres away from all this trilling madness, on the outskirts of Ornos. It is an intimate, elegant hotel; a multi-tiered enclave of Greek Orthodox white-and-blue tumbling down a rocky hillside to a diminutive pebble beach. It has only 40 rooms and suites, most of them with lovely views of the bay from a little balcony or terrace. After the enormous buffet breakfast, you may want to head straight for a sun lounger near the main swimming pool, with its swim-up bar and alfresco restaurant.
