The hotel is just like the animal, a bit strange-looking, but appealing all the same. Rather than taking a more predictable minimalist approach, this purpose built property has echoes of Art Deco, with black and white Hollywood portraits and satin eiderdowns. The lobby, meanwhile, tries for colonial chic: potted palms, bamboo vases and orchids. Excellent soundproofing means that when you close the French windows and draw the salmon-pink drapes, it's easy to forget you're above one of New York's busiest thoroughfares. Chinoiserie, underneath the lobby, serves dinner only. Originally described as Franco-Chinese, then International, the cuisine now seems entirely Gallic (petit filet mignon with mashed potatoes and braised short ribs).
