Charming high-altitude village near the Italian border; long established as Austria's leading ski resort for families. It is linked by cable car to neighbouring Hochgurgl and its glacier.

WHAT
23 lifts in an area of gentle slopes; a good choice at Easter because of its extremely reliable snow conditions, but best avoided in mid-winter when temperatures can be very low.

WHY
Obergurgl is where Austrian instructors learn to teach, so the ski school is exemplary. Remote car-free village at the end of a valley. Superlative hotels and lively evenings of Glühwein and Gemütlichkeit.

HOW
90 minutes' drive from Innsbruck airport. Hotel Edelweiss is at the foot of the pistes and has a candlelit stübli for dinner.
