When Olivier Massart, head of a Paris fashion agency, transformed his sprawling family estate in the Luberon region into a hotel-villa complex, he built nine houses on a remote hillside surrounded by cypress trees and fruit groves. And he decided to use his superb collection of contemporary art and furniture to decorate them.
As he says, 'Art should be shared.' Accordingly, there are no hand-stitched Provençal quilts or lavender bouquets at Domaine des Andéols: each of the villas - some with private, stone swimming pools and sun decks - has been decorated according to a different theme, from the flamboyant Maison Voyageurs, complete with a stuffed Bengal tiger, mock-tortoise sofa and giant palm tree, to the more restful, Zen-white Maison Blanche. Elsewhere, cutting-edge chic predominates, with blue and red resin floors, scarlet Araki and pistachio Noguchi sofas, perspex tables by Philippe Starck and deep, rectangular, charcoal bathtubs. The Domaine's restaurant, headed by 32-year-old chef Daniel Hébet (who earned a Michelin star for La Mirande in Avignon), serves wildly creative Provençal cuisine.
