NEW MAJESTIC HOTEL

SINGAPORE
It isn't too far-fetched to say that if you want to learn about Singaporean art, you should check into New Majestic Hotel. The conceptually ambitious hotel offers an insight into the cultural heart of the city, thanks to Peng Loh, a lawyer-turned-hotelier who gave the city the equally quirky Hotel 1929 around the corner three years ago. This 30-room hotel is in a restored 1928 building on the edge of Chinatown. It is filled with intriguing artefacts such as old dentist's chairs and theatre seats; there are views of the popular Majestic restaurant from the pool (owner-chef Yong Bing Ngen whips up unforgettable Modern Cantonese cuisine); the lobby ceiling had been stripped bare to expose old paintwork; and, most notably, every idiosyncratic room tells a different story, making use of Loh's extensive vintage-chair collection, age-old fans, antique, cast-iron bathtubs and works of emerging local artists who make social statements with bold murals and cheeky installations. In-room amenities are top of the line: expect a bathtub in all rooms (some are in the garden), Kiehl's toiletries, Ploh bedding, Bose stereos and Wi-Fi. A spa and bar open in October.

WHEN TO GO
June for Singapore Arts Festival and Great Singapore Sale.

ROOM TO BOOK
Five Design Concept Rooms are decorated by the city's eminent creative talents. Film and theatre director Glen Goei's Wayang Room is inspired by Zhang Yimou's Raise the Red Lantern and fashion-show producer Daniel Boey's Pussy Parlour features a French chandelier, neon lights and mirrors.
