HOTEL DUOMO

RIMINI, ITALY
PHOTO GALLERY
These days, design hotels need to pull out all the stops to get noticed. The Hotel Duomo in Rimini, Italy's top Adriatic resort, does just that. It is Ron Arad's first foray into hotels, and his industrial-design background comes through in some audacious party pieces, such as the huge chrome ring that houses the reception desk and the brass benches in the NoMi club and bar, which swoop up the walls and onto the ceiling. The bedroom design follows Arad's uncompromising dictum, 'I don't want to make people feel at home, because they're not at home.' In the Loop rooms pod-like 'wet rooms' thrust out into the sleeping area, while the nine Dreaming Suites (three with hydro-massage pools on terraces) are roomier and equally striking showcases for Arad's furniture, all of which is for sale. Created by British designer David Atkinson, the mood lighting in the rooms can be switched from aubergine (our favourite) to crimson to lime green. Rimini and its surrounding resorts are the centre of Italy's club scene, and this self-styled 'club with rooms' is making a pitch for the classier end of the party market.
