From a distance, its stone-clad, concrete
tiers and jutting walkways could remind one of a multi-storey car park. Once inside Jade Mountain, however, they suddenly all make sense. For what Russian-Canadian architect Nick Troubetzkoy has created in his 24 spectacular suites are spaces that seem to float out over the Caribbean, hovering between earth and sea and sky. The effect is achieved by combining size (five-metre ceilings and floor areas of up to 186 metres square) with a missing fourth wall so that the living and sleeping area sweeps towards the huge infinity-edged pool, which in turn flows out into a jaw-dropping view of St Lucia's iconic twin Pitons. For sheer theatricality it would be hard to beat. The flair for the dramatic continues in the details: the fibre-optics illuminating the pool at night; the 12 tropical hardwoods (all sustainably harvested) in the louvred doors and the chromotherapy (coloured-light treatment) baths.
But for all its innovation Jade Mountain, a 'resort within a resort' at Troubetzkoy's long-established Anse Chastanet, remains resolutely low-tech. The emphasis is on harmony with nature so there are no phones, radios or TVs, though there is Internet access at reception for those who can't go 'cold-turkey'. Residents can use Anse Chastenet's beaches and sporting and eating facilities, or dine at the resort's own rooftop restaurant. The place would suit lovebirds of all ages (there are no children under 15), but some may want to book a suite where the loo is not part of the open-plan concept.
