JIA SHANGHAI

SHANGHAI, CHINA
PHOTO GALLERY
This 1920s building, with its distinctive, half-moon balconies overlooking Nanjing Road, has 55 fresh, informal bedrooms furnished with Knoll and Hans Wegner pieces that don't sacrifice comfort for looks; Warhol-inspired collage photographs by Russel Wong supply a whimsical burst of museum-quality colour. Lined with Bisazza tiles and equipped with deep tubs, the bathrooms of even the 37 standard rooms are among Shanghai's best. The two penthouse suites have well-stocked cocktail cabinets and a barman on demand, a proper kitchen and second bedroom. One even has DJ equipment and a steam room. There is complimentary Wi-Fi throughout, a small, computer-equipped business centre (also free of charge), a 24-hour gym and free wine in the lobby-level lounge, a meeting place for Shanghai's beautiful people. The young Italian chef at the copper-clad Issimo restaurant turns out what are possibly China's finest pizzas. Thanks to the staff's world-class service, this is an exceptional boutique hotel in China's financial capital.

WHEN TO GO
September and October are the most comfortable months, after summer's humidity and before winter's chill.
