For a rural weekend escape centred on excellent dining, Christopher and Judy Bradley's restaurant-with-rooms fits the bill perfectly. In an exquisite setting on the banks of the River Teme, sitting at the foot of Ludlow castle ramparts, the star attraction is Chris Bradley's Michelin-starred modern British cooking. Dining here is an occasion, and each table gets a personalised menu with the name of the diners and the date on it. The menu is set, with no choice until dessert, but what food it is. Chris Bradley describes his Michelin-star cooking as 'cutting-edge comfort' with dishes such as Foie gras custard with sweetcorn cream & sesame glaze, roasted rack and slow cooked shoulder of Marches lamb with garden sorrel & mint and baby spinach, and iced plum sponge with star anise ice cream. Staff understand guests' priorities, and the restaurant offers cold storage for food purchases, as Ludlow's famous marketplace and delis are only a few minutes' walk away. The six bedrooms are comfortable, and stylish with a neutral decor. Attention to detail is paramount, with L'Occitane goodies, hand-made beds, and fur-covered hot-water bottles.
